Urban violence in Latin America: the case of Caracas. A comparative ethnographic perspective
Ce projet de recherche vise à développer et approfondir la réflexion théorique sur les ordres territoriaux armés et les gouvernances criminelles en Amérique latine à travers le cas peu étudié du Venezuela. La recherche en cours rassemble des observations ainsi que des entretiens avec des habitants, des officiers de police et des membres de groupes armés dans deux quartiers populaires de Caracas. Il s'agit d'un projet ethnographique comparatif dans lequel deux types d'acteurs armés non étatiques vivant dans deux secteurs de la ville de Caracas sont analysés : les Colectivos armés (groupes armés d'autodéfense para-étatiques loyaux au gouvernement) et un "Méga-gang", qui fait partie d'une forme relativement nouvelle de crime organisé au Venezuela. Le projet se concentre sur les processus d'organisation interne vécus par ces groupes, sur les relations avec les communautés locales, les transformations des relations avec l'État au cours du processus politique connu sous le nom de la Révolution Bolivarienne, et les types de gouvernance criminelle établis dans leurs communautés.

Veronica Zubillaga is associate professor at the Universidad Simón Bolívar in Caracas. She is a sociologist who specializes in the study of urban violence in Latin America. Her research focuses on youth gang violence in Caracas, gender, and public policy. She holds a PhD from the Catholic University of Louvain (Belgium). She has combined academia with public impact throughout her career, promoting an arms control and disarmament public policy in her home country of Venezuela. In 2016, she cofounded the Red de Activismo e Investigación por la Convivencia, an association devoted to research on urban violence and activism on human rights and public policy. She previously received a Fulbright Scholarship and a grant from The Open Society Foundations for her research. She was Craig Cogut Visiting Professor of Latin American Studies at Brown University (2014-15), Santander Visiting Scholar at the David Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies, Harvard University (2016) and Visting Fellow at the Kellogg Institute for International Studies (2018-2019).
