Le réseau mondial des Instituts d'études avancées basés dans les universités (university-based Institutes for Advanced Study - UBIAS) réunit 50 établissements dans 24 pays dans le monde. Il réunit les meilleurs instituts sur différents continents: en Europe, Aix-Marseille, Bielefeld, Bologne, Edimbourg, Jérusalem, Munich, Zürich; en Asie, Nagoya, Nankin, New Delhi, Séoul, Tokyo, en Amérique: Harvard, Sao Paulo, Vancouver, en Afrique: Accra, Johannesbourg.
Le réseau UBIAS représente un bassin scientifique exceptionnel pour la mobilité internationale de haut niveau (plus de 750 chercheurs étrangers par an sont accueillis dans les instituts membres) et pour l'incubation de projets innovants, interdisciplinaires et internationaux.
La fondation RFIEA participe aux activités du réseau depuis 2010 et en assure la coordination pour la période 2021-2023 avec les instituts de Nagoya (Japon) et d'Accra (Ghana). La communauté scientifique française peut ainsi bénéficier d'un accès facilité à ces instituts prestigieux et aux initiatives importantes qu'ils déploient ensemble.
Depuis 2014, l'initiative phare du réseau UBIAS est l'Intercontinental Academia (ICA) qui facilite la mise en relation de chercheurs/enseignants-chercheurs internationaux en début de carrière avec des mentors de très haut niveau. En 2021-2022, l'Intercontinental Academia est consacrée au thème "Intelligence and Artificial Intelligence" est coordonnée par la France et le Brésil avec la participation de deux prix Nobel et de nombreux chercheurs parmi les plus éminents au niveau international. En France, l'Academia se déroule en collaboration avec les principaux sites universitaires et de recherche franciliens.

UBIAS stands for “University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study”. The UBIAS network was initiated in 2010, when representatives from 32 research institutes worldwide met at the conference entitled "University-Based Institutes for Advanced Study in a Global Perspective: Promises, Challenges, New Frontiers," hosted by the Freiburg Institute of Advanced Studies, Germany. The founding of the first UBIAS dates back more than 40 years. However, the last decade has seen an upsurge in the establishment of such institutes across the globe – a trend that continues. Unlike traditional Institutes for Advanced Study, UBIAS institutes are associated with or embedded within a university, and actively contribute to the academic culture and the scientific achievements of their home university.
Connecting researchers across the globe
By offering various fellowship programmes on different academic levels (junior and senior researchers), UBIAS institutes bring together outstanding researchers from different disciplines, nationalities and academic backgrounds, creating a productive environment for innovative research. These common characteristics have proved to be a fruitful basis for mutual exchange, although the individual institutes display a large variety of different concepts and academic pursuits. With their individual profiles, they answer to the specific needs and strengths of their affiliate university. While many institutes have traditionally concentrated on humanities and social sciences, an increasing number of institutes now incorporate theoretical and experimental sciences.
