Les mathématiciens qui travaillaient à Turin sous la supervision de Giuseppe Peano entre la fin du XIXe siècle et le début du XXe siècle étaient des spécialistes en logique et mathématiques, mais ils s’intéressaient aussi à la linguistique, la psychologie, l’histoire des sciences, la philosophie, la philologie et la politique. Giovanni Vailati (1863-1911), en particulier, a appliqué une approche interdisciplinaire à l’investigation de plusieurs questions épistémologiques, dont la nature des définitions, le rôle du langage technique et les propriétés de la méthode scientifique. Le développement d’une forme originale de pragmatisme pourrait aider à comprendre la conception de la connaissance qui soutenait son approche interdisciplinaire.

The group of mathematicians who studied or worked in Turin under the supervision of Giuseppe Peano between the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, were highly specialized in logic and the foundation of mathematics, but had also multidisciplinary interests in linguistic, psychology, history of sciences and philosophy, philology, and politics. Giovanni Vailati (1863-1911), in particular, applied a truly interdisciplinary approach to the research into several fundamental epistemological questions, including the nature of definitions, the role of technical language, and the properties of scientific method. Vailati’s development of an original form of pragmatism should be taken into account in order to understand the conception of knowledge that underpins his interdisciplinary approach.
